Todos Santos, Sierra de la Laguna mountains, Mexico
Pueblo Magico - The Village of Todos Santos, vibrant and active was initially founded as a Mission in 1724. Todos Santos has long-been special. The Church, Theater, Cultural Center & Museum and other historic buildings are often open to the public. Todos Santos is a small coastal town in the foothills of Mexico's Sierra de la Laguna Mountains, on the Pacific coast side of the Baja California Peninsula, about an hour's drive north of Cabo San Lucas on Highway 19 and an hour's drive southwest from La Paz and very close to the Tropic of Cancer. Blessed with the most favorable climate in Baja Sur, Todos Santos is a haven for artists, craftsmen, surfers and travelers seeking adventure, natural beauty and a healthy lifestyle.
During the Mission Period, this oasis valley was deemed the only area south and west of La Paz worth settling, as it had the only reliable water supply. Colonized in 1723 by Jesuit missionaries, an outpost mission was established, followed by the full-fledged Misión Santa Rosa de Las Palmas in 1733. At the time, the town was known as Santa Rosa de Todos Santos, in honor of its benefactor Doña Rosa de La Peña. It was eventually shortened to its current name, which translates to “All Saints.”
