Barcelona and Gaudi go together. A Spanish Catalan architect from Reus and the best known practitioner of Catalan Modernism, Antoni Gaudí’s works reflect an individualized and distinctive style, influenced by his passions in life: architecture, nature, and religion. Gaudí considered every detail of his creations and integrated into his architecture such crafts as ceramics, stained glass, wrought ironwork forging and carpentry. He also introduced new techniques in the treatment of materials, such as trencadís which used waste ceramic pieces.
Seven of his works were declared World Heritage Sites by UNESCO. This is Casa Batllo, where it was almost impossible to find straight lines. The walls, roofs, doors, windows all followed the flowing shapes of water and were patterned over the designs found in nature, especially at sea. The rooftop is one of the most famous in Spain with the sculptures towering into the blue sky and making Barcelona instantly recognizable.
